As winter approaches, many of us dread the skin struggles that come with it—dryness, itchiness, cracking, and even flaking. Observed on October 24th, My Best Winter Skin Day, founded by The Skin of Color Society (SOCS), highlights how winter skin impacts people of all skin tones and types, offering actionable tips for dealing with it. Whether you’re learning new ways to care for your skin or exploring different moisturizing methods, this day reminds us that everyone needs a bit of extra love for their skin during the cold months.
I’ll never forget an interview I once watched with an African model who shared that her mother used Vaseline as a moisturizer for her growing up. It struck me because she spoke about how effective it was for her skin, even in harsh conditions. I’ve tried it myself from time to time, and while it’s a thick, occlusive moisturizer, it does help lock in moisture, especially when your skin needs that extra barrier in winter. It’s simple and affordable, something many people can try for protection against the cold.
When I lived in Miami, I met a man from Brazil who joked that he was allergic to winter because his skin would dry out and crack in the cold. At the time, I found it funny, but the reality is that winter skin troubles affect so many of us! Whether you face harsh winters or cooler temperatures that zap moisture from your skin, it’s essential to have a plan to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
Here are five key tips for maintaining healthy skin during the winter:
1. Moisturize More Often
In winter, your skin loses moisture faster due to the dry air, so upping your moisturizing routine is essential. Opt for thicker creams or ointments that lock in moisture and create a barrier against the elements. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin, which are known for drawing moisture into the skin. Vaseline or petroleum jelly, as the African model’s story suggests, can also be a useful barrier to protect skin from the elements.
2. Don’t Forget Sunscreen
Even though the sun seems less harsh during winter, harmful UV rays can still penetrate the clouds and damage your skin. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily to protect your skin from UV damage. Sunscreen also helps prevent hyperpigmentation and fine lines, keeping your winter skin looking smooth and radiant.
3. Use a Humidifier
Indoor heating systems dry out the air, which can strip your skin of its natural oils. Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain moisture levels in the air, preventing your skin from drying out. Keeping a portable one on your desk or bedside can make a big difference, especially overnight when skin is in repair mode.
4. Hydrate from the Inside Out
Drinking plenty of water helps maintain your skin’s hydration levels. While this might sound like a summer tip, it's just as important in winter when you may not feel as thirsty. Herbal teas like chamomile or green tea not only hydrate but also provide antioxidants that are great for skin health.
5. Switch to Gentle Cleansers
Harsh soaps and cleansers can strip your skin of natural oils, making it more susceptible to dryness. Opt for gentle, sulfate-free cleansers that help maintain the skin’s natural barrier. If you prefer natural products, try cleansing with oatmeal-based formulas or honey-infused face washes, which both soothe and hydrate the skin.
Winter Prep Recipes for Skin Hydration:
Oatmeal and Honey Hydrating Mask: Mix 2 tablespoons of ground oats with 1 tablespoon of honey and a few drops of almond oil. Apply the mask to your face for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.
Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Balm: Combine equal parts coconut oil and shea butter in a double boiler until melted. Pour the mixture into a jar and let it cool. Use this balm on your hands, feet, and any dry patches for deep hydration.
Avocado and Yogurt Soothing Mask: Mash half an avocado with 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and apply it to your face for 15 minutes. The natural oils from the avocado combined with the probiotics in yogurt provide a soothing and moisturizing effect.
DIY Hydrating Spray: Mix 1 cup of rose water with a few drops of glycerin and vitamin E oil in a spray bottle. Spritz on your face during the day for an instant hydration boost.
Winter skin may seem inevitable, but with these tips, you can take control of your skincare routine and ensure your skin stays healthy and hydrated. My Best Winter Skin Day on October 24th is an opportunity to educate ourselves on the importance of skincare during the cold months and to explore different solutions for all skin types.
