A Personal Story: Papa Bingle’s Firework Legacy
My maternal great-great-grandfather, affectionately known as Papa Bingle, was a pioneer in the fireworks industry. In the early 1900s, he founded St. Louis' first fireworks company, the St. Louis Firework Company. His work in the industry was so influential that in 1916, he was featured in a book on prominent St. Louisans. Ironically, that same year, he moved his family to New York, where he became the president of the Unexcelled Fireworks Company.
The Unexcelled Fireworks Company, under Papa Bingle's leadership, not only produced fireworks but also made flares for railroads to signal problems on the tracks. The company thrived during World War I, manufacturing munitions for the government. The Bingle family lived on Park Avenue before moving to a home on Maple Hill Drive in Larchmont, Westchester County, New York. Papa Bingle commuted to his office in the Empire State Building in NYC.
One of the most cherished family stories involves my great-grand aunt's wedding. Papa Bingle arranged a spectacular firework display at Spring Lake, New Jersey, for the reception. There were little prizes attached to parachutes at the edge of the lake. The young men jumped in their cars and raced to the other side of the lake to hunt for the prizes. This event was a highlight for everyone who attended and showcased Papa Bingle's flair for creating memorable moments.
Papa Bingle also had a tradition of sending fireworks to my grandmother's house when she was little. The man who delivered them was hired to set them off, making my grandmother popular with the neighborhood kids who would gather on the back steps to watch the display.
A particularly intriguing story about Papa Bingle involves his trip to China to purchase fireworks. He was so well-liked that the locals led him to a secret room where they showed him their newest invention, the sparkler. I always think of that story when I light a sparkler and imagine the joy it brought to my grandmother, who was one of the first kids to try them out.
Fireworks are more than just a display of lights and sounds; they are a source of joy, community bonding, and cultural significance. My great-great-grandfather, Papa Bingle, played a significant role in the fireworks industry, creating memories that have been cherished for generations. The legacy of fireworks continues to bring people together, celebrating life's moments with spectacular displays of art and science
